Printmaking is an introspective and transformative medium for me. It allows me to indulge myself in the mechanical and the meticulous, yet offers elements of spontaneity and immediacy that captivate me. I perceive creating to be a primal experience. I value this because it connects me with my innermost dreams, fears and belief systems. Spiritually, it feels like home.
When I create, time seems irrelevant. I am so completely engaged in the moment that past, present and future simply flow together. I enjoy exploring the nature of memory…the way in which fragments merge and disintegrate over time. Textural layers form naturally through the monotype process. Visual elements intrigue me as they choose to surface or re-surface, leaving others behind to recede into the background.
My etching method integrates photography, mark-making and digital collage with a traditional hand-pulled process. I find significance in combining what often appear to be disparate items, many of which have found me in my travels. Intuitively drawn to nature, childhood memories, and those things worn, deteriorated and affected by age, I strive for an imagery that embodies a history of decay and renewal.” —Roxie Johnson |
